What is acne?

Acne is a common chronic skin disorder affecting the pilosebaceous units of our skin, hair follicle and oil gland leading to blockage of the follicles and inflammation. Acne affects males and females of all races and ethnicities and it's very common in the teenage years and can be common amongst adults.

What causes acne?

Acne is due to a combination of factors:

  • Genetic tendency
  • Androgenic (male) hormones
  • Bacteria

Acne can be exacerbated by:

  • Polycystic ovarian disease
  • Medications like steroids, hormones
  • Occlusive skincare and cosmetics
  • Highly processed food

What is the treatment for acne?

Acne is graded in severity from mild, to moderate to severe. At the Marr clinic, we have a multitargeted approach. With moderate acne, prescription topical Vitamin A in combination with oral antibiotics are required.

With severe acne, referral to a dermatologist is imperative to control acne and prevent scarring. Oral isotretinoin (a type of Vitamin A) in combination with high doses of oral antibiotics is often needed. We work closely with Dr lan McColl, a consultant dermatologist in Tugun for urgent referrals for our clients with severe acne.

Mild acne is treated with topical anti-acne agents such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or azelaic acid in combination with prescription Vitamin A cream. In females, an anti-androgen oral contraceptive pill is often prescribed to reduce excess androgens which may drive acne flares.

All our clients receive a full skincare consultation which incorporates the use of prescribed medications as well as an effective skin care regimen. LED, Laser Therapy and professional Chemical Peels with Beta Hydroxy Acids are effective in-clinic treatments offered at The Marr Clinic to complement prescribed creams and medications.
